materia obscura, launches with witchcraft themed three-part techno series entitled “trilogia del aquelarre”, inaugurating with abstract division, cadans, nx1 and lucindo. based on francisco de goya’s black paintings “el aquelarre”, which is exhibited at the museo del prado in madrid.

“cliché’s principle” exhibits the two-sided aura of an artist long familiar with the cultivation of diy ethos: an effortless expulsion of playful immediacy and the unfolding of a musician well versed in unpretentious composition. lucy cliché’s five track ep for fleisch records is a jacking romp through 120-125bpm electro/new-beat, swooning through downcast ambience, lobotomised vocal samples and sweat-drenched hardware rhythms.
lucy’s musical oeuvre piles high, as a figure in the sydney underground for the past 15 years she has always explored sounds that playfully antagonize the status-quo, the dysfunctional no-wave approach of her band naked on the vague and the manipulated tape ambience of half high echo throughout cliché’s principle in the form of chorus buzzed synth chords, abstract drones and ethereal evocation. while there is the strong presence of a live veteran at work behind the machines, cliché’s principle holds five tracks produced purely with the intention of paving the dance-floor.

mantra makes an entry to finnish proform series with his raw and uncompromised four track acid ep called “the abyss”. after releases on bunker records, polybius trax, solar one music and abstract acid under the mantra alias craig stainton delivers four tracks of jackin pure acid techno madness in the veins of true underground. starting with “next culture” is a good introduction to pumping beats and a moaning 303 while “beat methods” takes a rougher and tougher angle to acid. just imagine yourself in a warehouse party in the morning jammin to some acid. on the b-side “the abyss” leads us to the deep end of the 303 or even to the bottom of the acid sea. “singularity” ends this package with great 303 lines definitely burning up the house! a limited and numbered edition of 200, after that it’s gone, no represses, no digital, so you know what to do!

the law of seven refers to the spiritualist philosopher gurdjieffs idea that the evolution of phenomena proceeds according to a universal seven-step process. clay tells us that while this idea did not strictly factor into the composition of these tracks, you could abstract some elements into the musical creation process. gurdjieff was quite a thinker, but also composed music so i thought the lines i was drawing carried some weight. in particular his notion that creation proceeds through increasing restrictions which i find to be incredibly relevant to my process at least. time limitations and performance settings particularly seem to allow me to be far more productive than just working freely with no solid end point in mind

marking its ten-year anniversary dynamic reflection is set to release continuum, a collection of five uniquely intertwined ep’s. the special series commemorates the label’s roots, evolution and establishment and honors its residents and friends. continuum will feature twenty exclusive tracks from artists ranging from oscar mulero, steffi, deepbass, jeroen search and shifted to delta funktionen, abstract division, donato dozzy, mike parker and blawan. limited box set with 5 coloured vinyls.

aar is a project by milan-based producer, dj and designer giorgio di salvo. the first grade lp is his first record under this name, self-released in collaboration with haunter records, the first chapter in a new series dedicated to tonal and rhythmic experimentation. advanced audio research is the ironic definition of this new music course of his, a nod to the large amount of esoteric studio gear accumulated and (ab)used during the years. the project itself is the result of years of study and experimentation with generative music matrices, based on the application of a three dimensional array of variables and unknowns to algorithmic pattern creation. the result is punishing, close to the most radical exploits in ear-wrenching breakcore, footwork and jungle, albeit with a sonic and structural finesse that reveals the producer’s manic dedication. track a-4 is produced in collaboration with somec and b-01 in collaboration with heith, channeling abstract and melancholic vibes into the project. vinyl comes in ultra ltd. edition of 100 copies, each one wrapped in a different hand-printed folder.

koova returns to brokntoys for a second ep after his empty spaces. conducere presents the producer showcasing his personal take on the genre, with 4 tracks of tense, melodic electro. one of the founders behind the london modular alliance, he has released sought after eps on cpu, ac and abstract forms. the ep is backed up by a remix by max ravitz aka patricia who takes the originals into eerie, ghostly territory.

after reissuing stanislav tolkachevs masterpiece blue mood, the intergalactic research institute for sound comes back with two fresh pieces from georgian artists zesknel and irakli. following a strong start with de sounds from georgia, this new record explores a more abstract electronic music. zesknel, who is a resident of the renowned bassiani club, collaborates here with irakli on two dreamy and airy soundscapes which aspire to depict and recreate the atmosphere of the georgian capital. to do so, they asked for the help of rezo glonti who proceeded to make field-recordings in tbilisi. this work served as a base in order to create something unique and true to the city. the project is part of a sound installation which aims to blend architecture with sound. the idea of the two artists was to conceive a space where they could translate the spirit of tbilisi. inside that space will be found works exhibited by other georgian artists. and this is all part of the exhibition >lara protects me. eine georgische erzählung< at the museum angewante kunst frankfurt

only few artists have managed to develop their own distinct style to such perfection as abe, while remaining almost entirely unknown to the public ear. he dwells in minimal music, abstract structure and well-crafted melancholia. -peasants sought instead- itself is heavily influenced by modern classical music, modal jazz and world music and is at times demanding, while remaining slightly subdued. style-wise it can be seen as ambient, though abe doesn t feel completely at home in this genre, because of its emphasis on atmosphere rather than structure. recorded at abe s home in rotterdam, it is his strongest work to date and already highly appreciated by some of the most exquisit selectors around.

van wey debuts on apollo with his stunning new album drowning in daylight, exploring cavernous soundscapes on a grand canvas that throb with a delicate intimacy. a stalwart dj and promoter of the halcyon 90s san francisco rave scene, van wey fled to china in the early 2000s to escape the curdling of his musical dreams as the scene became more commercial. since his return he s been incredibly prolific in his creation, etching out peerless ambient works that have captivated listeners with their delicate melody and fascinating textures through releases for the likes of echospace, kompakt and styrax - 2018 s a different definition of love marks his 30th bvdub album to date. classically trained in piano and violin as a child, van wey s symphonic approach to ambience is truly remarkable, epic in it s scale with each of it s 4 tracks clocking in around the 20 minute mark, drowning in daylight envelops the listener in swathes of nostalgic pads and nested layers of distortion, strings and haunted voices. drowning in daylight could well be van wey s crowning achievement to date and a testament to the power of instrumental abstract music to emotionally engulf the listener.

new yorker electronic producer dj spider is back on itay’s out-er with a muggy, abstract techno release “human erosion field ep”, similarly to its debut “v ep”, released in september 2017 and produced in featuring with his longtime friend phil moffa.
italian label out-er presents its twenty-sixth release continuing to explore the diverse musical path between house, techno and experimental electronic - which appears in most cases on out-er’s sub-label pregnant void. “human erosion field ep” otherworldly showcases both a radiant take on electronic as well as gloomy and wild-eyed pieces, an aesthetic approach for which dj spider has been most known in the scene. overlooking to the style of the tracks, the release does contain a sinister mood and a dense, solid sense of groove overall, a typical recurring feature of the producer’s previous outputs.

we are glad to introduce this release by it. ivan iusco, the artist behind the it moniker, has been running minus habens records since 1992. its disturbance sublabel has been responsible for releasing forward thinking techno and experimental releases from a range of well known artist such as marco repetto, aphex twin, speedy j and atom heart among others. here we present three tracks that have previously been released on his era vulgaris cd album. the ep ranges from techno to more abstract broken beats on the flip side, displaying the versatility of it as a producer and encompassing the sound of the first years of disturbance.

fracture has always tried to support upcoming and interesting newcomers, people they believe in. chevel is one of them, and in 2014 came his first ep for fracture under his alias signalweiss. he returns now for round two. in 4 years, he has managed to establish himself as a prolific and talented artist with a steady stream of records on labels such as stroboscopic artefacts. chevel is an artist who likes to mix things up, always striking an interesting balance between experimentation and more dance floor oriented tunes. with -feelings- and -forbona-, he creates quite abstract but still effective dance music. it is for the club, but it is not mindless bangers. in the hands of pablo mateo, -forbona- turns into a more mental piece of techno. all in all, this new fracture release provides great tools for the smarter selectors out there.

mang dynasty are the collective force of bill brewster and ray mang. both should need no introduction! together they combine to form the mighty mang dynasty, and deliver crash the box a riot of afrobeat, house and disco stylings, laced expertly with horn stabs and vocal chops, guaranteed to light up any club or festival stage. on the remixes are two exciting up and coming producers currently making waves: lord leopard offers a chunky, abstract bumping house version that s good for the floor. tee mango takes a loopy disco excursion, with squelchy synth stabs and party starting vocal.

jickow releases his lead and debut single -pig tails- on the well known resopal label. the belgium based producer has been at the heart of the minimal techno movement and is also a revered producer and performer who creates amazing sounds. the original is a funky athmospheric track with wriggling synths executed in jickows darker, more stripped back and abstract edges of the dancefloor. add into the package are two outstanding remixes by matt sassari and timid boy. all in all an essential release for 2018.

two words is the debut release from the duo of canadian sound artist crys cole and australian songwriter francis plagne. building on a series of experimental live performances in which the pair toyed with possible common languages for their seemingly unrelated approaches to music, the lp’s two sides present a single piece that brings together abstract texture and slow-motion song in a sonic space where genre cedes to the logic of dreams.

uk dj and producer rohan walder, a.k.a. randomer furthers his exploration into deep, spatial techno on dekmantel’s ufo imprint. fusing together two-step rhythms, cavernous beats, distortion, layered kicks, and an attentive detail to sound design, randomer delivers an uncompromising array of abstract and destructive techno tracks.

extending from the abstract and varied sound worlds exposed in the alien jams radio show and guest mixes, nervous system responds to evoked feelings of unease and anxiety, anatomical complexities, signalling networks and political uncertainty, nervous system is the first compilation to be released on alien jams and brings together tracks by rosen, xname, acolytes & alohbe, foql, rkss, ondness and recsund.

mysterious japanese newcomer neem unveils his debut vinyl on japanese imprint aura music. the title track delivers some mechanical beats topped with delicate layers of samples and electronics. on the flip “forge” meanwhile is more abstract and spooky as strange voice murmurs on industrial background. “mustard-colored jacket” is a “basic channel” rooted minimal piece features some dub samples on heavy bass.

‘black lotus’ follows walton’s inclusion on tectonic’s landmark 100th release – riko dan’s ‘hard food’ ep, plus the ‘praying mantis’/ ‘koto riddim’ 12” (also on tectonic) and the ‘taiko’ ep on kaizen – the latter two of which hinted at the album’s sound, but didn’t fully prepare us for the brilliance to come. abstract electronics, grime, dubstep and new styles that don’t even have a name yet coalesce perfectly on this classic in the making. it finds walton at peak power, reaching just as far (if not more so) than anything on the pan, different circles, boxed or tectonic catalogues for pure futurism and new-terrain-traversing brilliance.

this is a debut release on vinyl for spanish based jordi navarra whose musical oeuvre stretches between “surf, hippie / space rock and crude electronic music” often different yet coated in tons of reverb and echo for “it’s final catalepsy”!
“micromundos,” needless to say for py devotees, concentrates on his cruder electronic soundscapes, incredible often ambient, drone themed pieces that on one hand dip their toes into the revered works of hans-joachim roedelius and dieter moebius, and the sky back catalogue whilst equally conjuring up a collision of spacemen 3 psych meets wire, early cabs or magazine darker more atmospheric, post punk industrial / experimental workouts.

laura jones returns for another ep outing on her label. despite weighing in with an incendiary first release that found mandar s sam remixing infuse s karousel and a follow up from jones that included one of the sadly departed trevino s final remixes, the label took a backseat to the birth of her daugter in 2017. a year on however and the pace has picked up with an ep from renowned modular wizzard kamran sadeghi at the start of the year and this latest ep from the label boss. the two originals are a snapshot of her evolving style. pathway places skippy beats and sub heavy kicks under a soaring chord sequence, abstract vocal samples and ethereal pad riff. tough crowd takes a moodier approach with a menacing sub bass and drum arrangement, bubbling filters building to a hook that unfolds halfway through to create a moment of formidable intensity. lee renacre s recent revival of his 100 hz alias courtesy of well received outings on slow life and bosconi among others, has found the producer on career-best form and he turns in a sublime remix that makes deft use of delicate top lines and bubbling oscillators to create a powerfully heady atmosphere.

after releasing in labels such as offworldcolonies, undveld brings to order&devotion an obscure journey through far landscapes. the beginning of the trip starts with two cuts starred by hypnotic beats, tense pads and abstract synths. following this, on the b side you’ll find a strong remix by label’s honcho kwartz, adding heavy industrialized elements to the lithuanian artist work. the journey ends with an ambient excerpt.

heady, astute, deep techno and ambient from blue veil, a new musical project from danny clancy. blue veils debut ep reveals gorgeously textured techno on tracks like wherethetimegoes and citizen score, as well as crafting some tender ambient passages on cuts like night czar and a kind of adventure. the ep will be released on dichotomy records, a new imprint, dedicated to refined electronic music. the labels ambition is to allow artists to explore dichotomies through their work, as they span sonic landscapes from pure ambient to techno, and other abstract dance sounds in-between. there will be a strong attention to the visual presentation of the label, with all artwork and photography also created by label boss danny clancy. with the next release lined up from ahu, and more to follow from there, the agenda for dichotomy records looks hugely promising indeed.

dutch label field records is back with another special album project, this time from japanese producer ena aka yu asaeda. bridge is an introspective soundtrack for a documentary also called bridge - out this spring - which is about the dejima bridge, a reconstructed symbol of the dutch-japanese trading history in nagasaki, japan. the album finds the producer stepping outside of his usual remit of dark ambient and experimental music, and instead comprises ten shorter tracks that touch on abstract and rhythmic sounds that define the essence of japanese culture. although he has worked with the director before, this is ena s first original sound track and finds him freely inspired by the movie and heading in exciting and unknown directions. hugely atmospheric throughout, there is hypnotic repetition of sounds, strange audio design and a mixture of melancholic moods with more dreamy synths. sometimes gloopy rhythms gently ripple beneath soothing harmonies and at others times a micro-rhythm appears through the constantly shifting and evolving found sound loops. it s a compelling and unusual album that seamlessly mixes human emotions with a mechanical sense of industry.

next up on the ever-eclectic xvi records, a shadowy figure steps into the spotlight: enter the mysterious captain over, whose dark yet soulful bruk-infused tracks soundtrack the next stage of their voyage towards the sun. for his debut outing, captain over calls on the abstract vocal stylings of the legendary trim (roll deep, 1800 dinosaur) on opening track sick. showcasing why hes one of the most iconic and forward-thinking mcs to grace the mic, trims dulcet tones twist through a jungle of shuffled beats and subterranean sub-bass, an eerie child-like melody drifting overhead. clack clack and no one ever really flies inhabit a more dancefloor friendly space, their unique syncopation, fierce instrumentation and relentless energy open up the dancefloor for some real get loose moments. on the remix, they hand the controls over to xvi homestay books (following on from the success of his previous feel it in my bones and high praise edits vol 1 releases which won praise from the likes of the black madonna, moodymann, gilles peterson and seven davis jr) books expertly crafts a cosmic footwork jam, full of his trademark soulful chords and eerie midnight saxophone licks. as he prepares to launch his forthcoming ep no-one every really flies into the cosmos captain over is beginning to cement his place as one to watch in the uk underground a sequel ep featuring grime upstart nico lindsay is scheduled for release later in the year, with several more collaborative works in progress.
